Chinese 60-Year Cycle, Climate and the Heat of 2026

Every unusually hot summer now seems to generate the same conclusion: temperatures are rising and progressively hotter summers are what we should expect.


But the Chinese 60-year cycle, described through the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches 天干地支 more than 2,500 years ago, offers a very different way of looking at long-term change. Rather than treating change as primarily linear, it describes recurring rhythms in which different energetic influences strengthen, peak and decline.


This is particularly interesting in 2026, the Bǐng Wǔ 丙午 Fire Horse year, one of the strongest Fire combinations within the 60-year cycle.


Could some of the exceptional heat we are experiencing therefore represent not simply a trend, but a point within a much longer rhythm?





The Problem with Looking at a Short Window


Modern forecasting relies heavily on statistical observations. This is enormously useful, but statistics are inevitably influenced by the period over which we choose to measure.


Look at a rising section of a much longer wave and it can appear to be a continuous upward trend. Extend the observation period and a different pattern may emerge.

This distinction between linear change and cyclical change is particularly interesting when viewed through classical Chinese thought.


More than 2,500 years ago, Chinese scholars were already describing time not simply as a succession of years, but as a series of interacting cycles.


One of the most important is the 60-year cycle of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, 天干地支 (Tiāngān Dìzhī).


2026: An Exceptionally Strong Fire Year


Within this system, 2026 is Bǐng Wǔ 丙午, the Yang Fire Horse year.

Both components have a strong association with Fire. Bǐng 丙 is Yang Fire, while Wǔ 午 represents the Horse and the height of Fire within the Earthly Branch cycle.


This makes 2026 an unusually Fire-dominant year within the traditional model.

From this perspective, unusually high temperatures during the year are therefore not particularly surprising. They correspond to a point in the cycle where Fire is expected to be exceptionally strong.


But there is an important difference between this cyclical interpretation and a simple extrapolation of recent temperature trends.

Fire does not continue increasing indefinitely.


The cycle moves on.


What Happens When the Cycle Turns?


This is where the next few years become particularly interesting.

If the classical cyclical model has something useful to tell us about longer-term environmental rhythms, we should not expect every subsequent summer simply to become hotter than the previous one.


The exceptional Fire influence should gradually subside as the energetic configuration changes.


That gives us something unusually valuable: a proposition that can be observed rather than merely debated.


Over the coming years, we can watch what actually happens.


Do temperatures continue to accelerate broadly in the manner suggested by some contemporary headlines? Or does the exceptional heat around this part of the cycle moderate?


Climate Change and Natural Cycles Are Not Necessarily Opposites


This does not invalidate the concerns of modern climate change advocates, nor does a traditional cyclical model explain every influence on climate.


Human activity, ocean circulation, atmospheric conditions, solar influences and many other factors interact within an extraordinarily complex system.


The interesting question is whether longer natural rhythms should also form part of the conversation.


A long-term warming influence and shorter or longer cyclical fluctuations can theoretically exist simultaneously. If so, interpreting every short-term extreme primarily as evidence of a continuing linear trajectory risks confusing the underlying trend with the position we currently occupy within a cycle.


The same problem appears in economics, biology and many other complex systems.

We notice the direction in which something has recently been moving and instinctively project that direction into the future.


Nature rarely behaves so simply.


An Ancient Idea Worth Testing


The value of classical Chinese thought is not that we should accept ancient ideas simply because they are ancient.


It is that they provide models developed from very long periods of observation.

The Chinese calendar is fundamentally a study of rhythm, transformation and recurrence. Yin becomes Yang; Yang reaches its maximum and begins to decline. Wood gives way to Fire, Fire to Earth, Earth to Metal, Metal to Water, before the process begins again.


Nothing remains permanently at its maximum.


This year's exceptionally strong Fire therefore offers an interesting opportunity.

Rather than arguing about which worldview is correct, we can observe.


If the 60-year cyclical interpretation is meaningful, the exceptional heat associated with this part of the cycle should not simply continue intensifying year after year.


The next few years will provide useful evidence.


And if temperatures do moderate, it will be equally interesting to see whether today's confident predictions are revisited and adjusted, or whether they quietly disappear as the news cycle moves on.


Perhaps one of the lessons of ancient Chinese thought remains particularly relevant in an age overwhelmed by data:


Having more observations does not necessarily mean we understand the pattern. Sometimes we also need to understand the rhythm.
